BOCA 2017 is the album in which recorded collegiate a cappella has moved past gimmickry into the complete integration of voice and technology, where arrangements and production choices interweave seamlessly to the point where you can no longer tell where each begins and ends. The human voice — the most powerful, emotional, and versatile instrument — is brought to bear fully on the album’s popular songs, delivering a poignancy and freshness that sets them apart from (and dare we say above) the original versions.
High school a cappella, for its part, has tackled the production hurdles to making a great album and has settled down to telling compelling, emotional stories. And underscoring the personal nature of these performances, three of the songs on BOHSA 2017 are originals, written by the high school students who are singing them. This is a record not only for BOHSA but for BOCA as well, although it bears noting that this year’s collegiate album also features an original track. We are looking forward to seeing at least one of these young talents join the ranks of Sara Bareilles (who first appeared with her original, “Gravity,” on BOCA 2004).
